I Thought the Bahamas Were Overrated — Then I Found This Island Chain

In summary

• Exuma offers a quieter, less developed Bahamas than Nassau.
• Boat trips reveal beaches, sandbars, pigs, iguanas, and reefs.
• Easy to reach from the U.S., but it is not a budget destination.

The Bahamas can be an easy sell to American travelers: warm weather, turquoise water and a location just off the coast of Florida. But for visitors whose only experience is Nassau, Paradise Island or a cruise stop, the country can also feel overly developed and heavily tourist-driven. Exuma challenges that perception.

In a recent Fodor’s account, the destination emerges as the kind of place capable of changing the mind of a traveler who previously felt underwhelmed by the Bahamas. Instead of casinos, cruise terminals and sprawling resorts, Exuma is defined by small islands, nearly empty beaches, intensely blue water and days spent moving between cays by boat.

    A Very Different Bahamas

Exuma is not one island but a chain of roughly 365 cays stretching across the central Bahamas. Great Exuma is the main hub, home to George Town and most of the area’s accommodations and services, while Little Exuma and the smaller islands farther north provide an increasingly remote experience.

That geography is central to the appeal. Travelers are not coming primarily for nightlife or resort entertainment. They come for secluded beaches, sandbars, snorkeling and boating — often spending as much time on the water as they do on land.

For Americans who have already visited Nassau, the difference can be substantial. Nassau offers convenience, large hotels, casinos and a busy tourism scene. Exuma feels slower, smaller and far less urbanized.

🏝️My favorite islands to visit are The Bahamas! Did you know there are over 700 islands in the country, and around 30 of those are inhabited! It’s a shame most people only know The Bahamas for Nassau, when it’s so much more. While Nassau does have its beauty, it’s not comparable to the family islands! 🏝️I’ve only been to Exuma, and Bimini when it comes to the family islands! I’ve been to Nassau way back in second grade, so I don’t remember it much! 🏝️The true beauty of The Bahamas is in those family islands! That’s where you’ll see the otherworldly waters and beaches! It’ll surely raise your standards! 📍The Bahamas Bimini | Bahamas | Beaches | Travel | Explore | Solo Travel | Exuma #exuma #traveltok #bahamas #beautifuldestinations #fyp

The Real Reason to Go: Get on a Boat

Some of Exuma’s most memorable experiences are inaccessible by car, making a boat trip less of an optional excursion and more of a defining part of the visit.

The Exuma Cays are home to the famous swimming pigs at Big Major Cay, but the region offers much more than its best-known Instagram attraction. Travelers can stop at deserted beaches, swim in shallow turquoise water, visit sandbars exposed by the tide, see Bahamian rock iguanas and snorkel around caves and reefs.

Thunderball Grotto, near Staniel Cay, is among the best-known stops and takes its name from the James Bond movie filmed in the area. The appeal, however, is less about checking off individual attractions than about the experience of moving between tiny islands surrounded by unusually clear water.

    Surprisingly Accessible From the U.S.

Despite its remote atmosphere, Exuma is relatively easy for Americans to reach. Exuma International Airport serves Great Exuma, and travelers can reach the island from the United States without treating Nassau as their final destination.

That makes Exuma especially attractive for travelers from Florida and the Southeast who want a Caribbean vacation without spending most of a day getting there. It can deliver the scenery and isolation associated with more distant tropical destinations while remaining geographically close to the United States.

Americans still need a passport, and travelers should remember that transportation becomes more limited once they arrive. Renting a car can be useful on Great Exuma and Little Exuma, while visiting the more remote cays generally requires a tour or private boat.

It Is Not the Bahamas’ Budget Option

The trade-off for Exuma’s relative isolation is cost. Travelers should not necessarily expect it to be cheaper than Nassau simply because it is less developed.

Hotels and vacation rentals can be expensive, restaurant choices are more limited, and boat excursions can add significantly to the cost of a trip. Groceries and other goods also tend to cost more because many products have to be imported.

For travelers who want an all-inclusive resort with a long list of restaurants, nightlife and organized entertainment, Nassau or another Caribbean destination may offer better value. Exuma makes more sense for visitors willing to spend more for scenery, space and a quieter experience.

    Who Will Like Exuma Most?

Exuma is particularly well suited to couples, families and groups looking for beaches and outdoor experiences rather than nightlife. It also makes a compelling alternative for Americans who have visited the Bahamas before and concluded that the destination was not for them.

The important distinction is that Nassau is not the Bahamas as a whole. The country contains hundreds of islands with dramatically different levels of development, and Exuma is one of the clearest examples of how different those experiences can be.
