In summary
• Ryanair bag-drop cutoff moves from 40 to 60 minutes Nov. 10.• Checked-bag passengers should arrive earlier or risk missing flights.
• Cabin-bag-only travelers are unaffected by the new rule.
Ryanair passengers who check a bag will need to get to the airport earlier starting November 10, and travelers who are used to cutting it close could be caught out.
The airline is moving its airport bag-drop cutoff from 40 minutes before departure to 60 minutes before departure at all airports. That means checked luggage must be handed over at least one full hour before the scheduled flight time.
For Americans traveling around Europe on Ryanair, the change is easy to miss but potentially expensive. Showing up 45 or 50 minutes before departure may once have been enough to check a bag. From November 10, it will be too late.
The new 60-minute cutoff applies everywhere Ryanair flies and leaves much less room for late arrivals
Ryanair says the change affects the roughly 20% of its passengers who check luggage. The remaining 80% who travel without checked bags and complete check-in online will not be affected.
The airline says the extra 20 minutes are intended to give passengers more time to get through security and passport control, particularly during busy travel periods, and to reduce the number of people who miss flights because of airport queues.
In practice, however, the new rule means travelers with checked baggage need to build significantly more margin into their airport arrival time.
That matters especially at large European airports where Ryanair passengers may face long walks, crowded security lanes or passport checks before reaching the gate.
For U.S. travelers in Europe, this is exactly the kind of Ryanair rule that can turn a cheap ticket into an expensive mistake
Ryanair’s low fares make it popular with Americans building multi-city European trips, but its operating rules can be stricter than what many U.S. travelers are used to.
A passenger arriving after the bag-drop deadline may still have plenty of time before the aircraft actually leaves, but that does not mean the airline will accept the luggage.
That can create an awkward choice: abandon the checked bag, rebook the flight or buy another ticket altogether.
The safest approach is to treat the new 60-minute deadline as the absolute latest possible time, not as a target arrival time.
For flights involving checked luggage, arriving at the airport two hours before departure will generally provide much more breathing room, and even earlier may make sense at airports known for long security or passport-control lines.
The rule starts November 10, and passengers without checked bags are the only ones who can ignore it
The change takes effect Tuesday, November 10.
Ryanair first announced the adjustment in April and is now reminding passengers before the new cutoff becomes active.
Travelers carrying only cabin baggage can continue to check in online and head directly to security, so nothing changes for them.
But anyone checking a suitcase should update the way they plan their airport arrival.
The difference is only 20 minutes on paper. In reality, it can be the difference between getting on the flight and watching it leave without you.
